The Civic Minded 5 and Timucua Arts Foundation are proud to be sponsors of Orange County Regional History Center’s Sam Rivers 100 event. Sam and Beatrice Rivers moved to the area- much to our collective surprise- in 1991. Our town was both their home and importantly, their musical laboratory.

Sam Rivers appeared on a sequence of Civic Minded 5 concerts, trying out ideas before they appeared elsewhere. In addition, Sam phoned at one point, stating was a member of our nascent presenting group. What can you say in response? As the years slide by, folks unflaggingly refer to the scores of Rivers band concerts we’ve collectively witnessed. It was and is part of our history.
Sam Rivers 100 is a day at Orange County Regional History Center. The day features a photo exhibit from underground music photography legend Jim Leatherman. At 2 p.m., a panel featuring Monique Rivers Rencher, longtime Rivers bassist Doug Mathews, authors Rick Lopez (The Sam Rivers Sessionography) and Michael C. Heller (Loft Jazz- Improvising New York in the 1970s), and Civic Minded 5’s Matt Gorney begins. As the evening arrives, we turn back the clock to sweaty, visceral concerts at The Social with many familiar Rivers alumni – The Rejuvenation Orchestra- playing selections from the vast Rivbea Orchestra catalog.
